Mary MacKillop: a Giant of our Colonial Story
Born into a struggling and dysfunctional family, a diminutive young woman had a dream of making a difference in her class-conscious colonial world. Once freed of her heavy family responsibilities, she could begin her work. Then came greater challenges, but still she soldiered on!
In this session, learn about the unplanned, exponential growth of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, their pioneering Social Welfare and Reform, as they responded the urgent needs of 19th Century Adelaide’s poorest.

Beyond Bigotry and Boundaries: Mary MacKillop’s (not Catholic) Backers
At a time when the leaders of her own Church were less than supportive, Mary and her Sister-companions were supported by several prominent Adelaideans. Although they did not share Mary’s religious beliefs, they recognised her goodness & humanity and backed her work amongst Adelaide’s poorest.
In this story-telling session, learn about Mary’s friendships with Emanuel Solomon, Joanna & Robert Barr Smith and Dr John Benson.

Mary MacKillop: Courage and Resilience by the Bucket-load!
Mary MacKillop’s life was filled with challenges. Characterised by drama, disappointments, illness and betrayal, she faced risk, uncertainty and a lack of security. Rather than buckle under the weight of challenge, she exhibited courage and resilience that remained undiminished to the end of her life.
In this story-telling session, learn how Mary chose not to be a victim to rise above it all and remain loving, sane, with a sense of humour. Can we do the same?
